The Buckeye Thread

CGMC this post was quite helpful to me, as it provides a look into the mystical, or at least that's what it seems like for me right now.

I have Three young pullets (14wks) living in the bed of my pickup until I can get to building their coop (waiting on some dirtwork). As a first timer, I have little other than speculation as to what is ok, safe, dangerous, normal, etc. for older birds and existing flocks and integrating. This nailed down what life is like with a flock that already exists as an entity.

Thank you!
If you only have three pullets, you can whip together a hoop house for them in an afternoon, and if you scrounge for used materials (as we typically do), you will find your costs can be very low. See this page on our website showing hoop houses and tractors: http://pathfindersfarm.com/hoophouse.html

O
ne thing to bear in mind, always use hardware cloth, never chicken wire, to house your birds. Predators like raccoons and possums can reach right through chicken wire and tear a bird to bits through it (disgusting, but true.) Chicken wire is only useful to keep chickens in, never to keep predators out.

Have fun with your birds!

That may be a perfect temporary fix until the dirtwork is done! These birds are so well behaved it amazes me. They stay in their little section of the bed and have a great time! The garage is insulated so that keeps the deep heat off their backs, and I have a fan blowing air around them so its made due, but I (and surely they are) am ready to let them be outdoors more.

I will look into the hoophouse. Thank you!

Just popping in to say hi and to subscribe to this thread. I have a breeding trio of 1 year old Buckeyes and will be picking up 3 more 3 month old Buckeye chicks tomorrow. The seller thinks those are two girls and a boy - so we'll see. Hoping to have enough between the two sets to get a small breeding program going. I am not in position to be a big breeder, nor do I want to go there, but I would like to breed a few extras to help keep the breed going in my area as well as raise some extra birds for meat and eggs. Neither local seller was sure of what line the stock they have is from - but one said Ohio and one said Kentucky - so I am at least somewhat sure they are not directly related.

Welcome to the thread! Lots of good folks post in here, don't hesitate to ask questions if you have any.

If you are in SW Ohio, there are several breeders in that area. If you are up towards Dayton (Miamisburg) then there is Jeff Lay at Crain's Run Ranch. Also, Joe Shumaker over by Washington Courthouse might have some.

Ditto, except I'm looking in SW Ohio. Just need some quality bloodlines to kickstart my program.
There are many good breeders in Ohio alone. If you would like more info, send a PM and I can point you in many directions. Many of them may not have birds till fall or even next year moving into spring. As it seems that when newbies ask questions, we other members can't post links to other breeders as it seems to up set some people in here. I just don't get it we are all here for one reason regardless of what our view points. We are here for the Buckeyes alone. This crap really needs to stop and every time someone posts something that offends someone go running to the mods. we are all adults here. As long as the language stays non offensive we should all just state what we think without calling others names and if you don't like what was stated then you have choices either move one and ignore it or post your opinion in a nice manner. I feel the only time that the mods should get involved is if you bash someone publicly or use offensive langauge.

Sorry mods but I have had enough and had to get this off my chest. I hope I did not offend anyone.

But anyway I hope you find a good breeder and are happy with your birds. I know I am and looking forward to many years with them.
