Does anyone know what a black Australorp rooster mixed with a barred rock hen would make? Or would it just simply be a mix? I've searched for it but all that i could find was people mixing a barred rock rooster with a black australorp hen.

Thanks, i figured they'd also make pretty good layers! in my flock my roosters are black Australorps and i have 3 BA hens, 3 BR hens and a silver lakenvelder.

Bringing up one of my threads that's a year old, namely because I'm about to find out what BA roo x BR hen makes. One of my BR hens went broody about 6 days ago and she's sitting on 6 eggs. Due to my hen breed ratio in my pen, 4 should by BA x BR and two should be full BA. I shooed the hen off the nest yesterday evening and candled and there's growth in at least 5 of the 6, the sixth one was questionable but I'll wait a few more days before tossing it.

Your Aussie rooster over a barred Rock hen will give you sex link chicks. The males will hatch out with a white/cream spot on the head, and feather out barred. The females will be pretty much the same as the pure Aussie chicks, with solid dark heads. So, you'll be able to spot the BA x BR males, but telling who is the BA x BR females vs both genders of the pure Aussies will take longer.

I look forward to seeing pics of your hatch!

Thanks for the info! I always read that a BR roo with a BA hen would make the sex links.

The hen is setting good though and I finally saw her eat today, every time I take her off of the eggs to check for extra eggs from the other hens she goes and drinks for about ten minutes then ignores the feed and sits back down on the eggs.

That's backward. You can't get any kind of sex link with a barred Rooster, all his offspring will be barred regardless of gender. The hen has to be the barred parent.

Donrae is correct. The most common hatchery Black Sex Link is a Rhode Island Red rooster X a Barred Rock hen. The male chicks hatch out black with a white spot on top of their heads (they look like Barred Rock chicks) and the female chicks are solid black at hatching.

Thanks peeps! I should be around day 7 or 8 and today I found one egg had been pushed out of the box, candled all of them and they all looked the same. Looks like about half of the insides is black almost like they're further along.. I put the one egg back with the others, if I find it out again tomorrow then I'll assume that she don't want it and take it out. After all, it might already be dead from being out for an unknown amount of time today. I also found that one of the eggs has been pecked and cracked a little, is that gonna kill it?

Also, if I find that the eggs are dying, if I put more eggs under her is she gonna abandon them on day 21 or will she wait till they all hatch?

I'm down 4 eggs..

I'm thinking she ate them,

maybe she thought or knew they were bad?

But two of them she ate had cracks so it's good that she didn't get the good eggs. Candled the two remaining eggs closer to dark than I did yesterday and I could see much more detail, they're doing good and are swimming around inside the egg
