Ok so I have a question .. I am worried about my girls and was wondering if anyone else has this problem. :/ so I got a run that we close at night and inside is the coop .. Well the girls know where there bed is and go in at night but I notice sometimes when we let our dog out before we go to bed the girls came out of there coop. What do I do? Does anyone else experience this? Can they see at night? And why do they come out at night. Sorry about all the questions , thanks in advance:rolleyes:

Hi,

I am fairly new to chickens, and by no means an expert... but I would lock them up in their coop at night. That's what I do with my girls. Are you able to do that with your coop? for their safety and your peace of mind.

Make sure you do not have a preditor problem, the only time my girls have came out at night is when attacked. I now close the coop up at night to help keep unwanted critters out, but mice rats and snakes can still get in. I also do a snake inspection most nights and have killed 2 7 footers and a 5 footer. Now some of them will get up before daylight and want out, I open the door well before sunup so they can get an early start.

Thank you all I think I will start closing the coop the only thing is getting up to let them out .. I'm not an early bird lol ill get the husband to do it.. But if it means keeping my girls safe I will def do it

good idea! We just purchased an automatic door that runs on batteries as we don't have electricity to the coop. So far so good. Its in the UK, so we paid a total of 136.00 Canadian dollars including shipping but its amazing! and it got here in a few days! we don't ever have to be up at the crack of dawn or be home at dusk to let them in. here's the link: http://www.chuxaway.com/page14.aspx

I have my run very protected with welded wire and hardware cloth. I have a heavy door with a latch at night and nothing get in, not even mice or snakes. I keep the run door open to the coop at night since its so hot in the coop.

The flock is always locked up at night and let out in the morning.
