I provide a serving of liquid water about dawn for at least 30 minutes before freezing, then they have free-choice access to soaked oats for balance of day. Frozen greens may also be used. Moisture content of soak oats and green is very high. Such can still be chipped away at even when temperatures below zero while ice frozen as a solid unit is hard for birds to consume. Chickens are very good at conserving water so long as heat is not a problem. Additionally, they probably derive more water from metabolizing food than they get by drinking. Availability of liquid water is optimal when diet is dominated by dry feed but they can get buy in good health as I describe.
