It is hard to tell the Pen's from the Welsummer. Even grown, they are so similarly colored. I have one Welly in with my three Pen hens and a blue Maran hen. I hope the babies grow up to be decent replicas of the Pen breed. I've been looking at photos and I have fallen in love with the wheaten color. I wonder how hard it will be to find some of those.

I set an incubator with about 8 Brahma eggs... only one fertile and it did not hatch. I also set 24 Maran/Partridge Penedesenca eggs and all were fertile but, only two made it to piping. One died in the shell so I have one lone chick out of all those eggs. Right now, it is black with the dark horn beak and grey legs. I'm thinking it probably will take on the black Maran coloring but only time will tell. Chick colors are so fickle. As to the incubator, I'm thinking my thermometer may be off temperature so I need to check it out. I have also bought a small fan to add to the incubator. Hopefully with those two changes I will get a better hatch next round.

I'm not real fond of the Maran Roo... he is young and not a full year old yet, and was supposed to be a sweet boy. So far, he has tried to take me on four different times, with the last one being a sneak attack as I was going out the coop door. I then catch him, which he really does not like, and ruffle his feathers by shaking his head when holding him by grabbing his neck and shaking his head. So far, he is leaving me alone. I forbid the grandkids from going in with him and his girls. They are afraid of my Brahma roo and he is a mild pussy cat by comparison.

Pretty sure this is my little penedesenca roo ..he's sooo tiny ..is that a face a mama could love or what

My seven Partridge Penedesencas came on Tuesday, last week. I ordered 5 hens and 2 roos. The hens are fairly similar with two a tiny bit larger, making me suspect that they are from a slightly earlier hatch, though one really never knows. It might just be feathers too. I have read that the roos are lighter in color as chicks and the two roos are a very light buff base color. One has dark markings like the hens do, but the second one has markings that are just a tiny bit darker than the base color and are hard to see until you really look at him. I wonder if he will be a wheaton. Only time will tell for sure, I guess.

I need to take photos of them. Not sure where the camera has hidden itself.

One of my three one year old Partridge hens is nicer than the other two... better comb and stance. They are laying like crazy. They are nice dark eggs.
