I'm wondering if you get scorpions and if the chickens are threatened by them.
as far as scorpions go I live in the middle of the city of Tucson and throughout all my digging around in the backyard this last year I've only come across one black widow. As far as I know though chickens search out and destroy scorpions. They are not immune to the bite but it won't kill them either. if they go in right they will bite off the stinger first and then go on for the kill. Happy chicken days to you. I hope that helps.
