I Despise pine chips!!

Has anyone tried to do PVC pipe feeders in the brooder? The chicks are still in my bathroom as they where getting out of my "chick pen" inside the chicken coop and the temp in TX has been NUTS!! Anyway, I am building an actual brooder for them in the coop and it will be big so I am trying to figure out the least messy food situation. I use hanging for my biggies but they clean up after themselves and I don't worry about them like I do these guys.

I know it's been a bit since this post and my chicks arE HUGE now, and very much at home outside in the coop. But I have since hatched and started over with all the fun baby stuff again. This time I used paper towel for 2 days then I put a half inch layer of sand...they LOVE it, and do do I!!
It doesn't get up in the food and water, they have a blast scratching around in it and with a kitty litter scoop the nasty stuff clumps up and comes right out (just like kitty litter). Who would've thought? Anyway, I thought I would mention it on here, I'm never going back! ;)

I've been meaning to try sand in my brooders. I've heard good things about it.

I really can't believe it's not the standard. Maybe expense is the issue, but I was wasting so much pine chips by changing the bedding all of the time and it takes very little sand. Bonus+++ no fire hazard if your using a heat lamp!!
