Horizontal Nipple Watering

Do you have the name of the heater you use? I've got the horizontal nipples on a study plastic bucket (old kitty litter bucket); I'm loving the setup and its worked great from day 1. Now I'm spoiled and can't imagine going to clean out water everyday, but I'm worried about them freezing up in the winter -- I live in the northeast. Thanks!

Just buy one with good reviews. You can also get a used 1 from Craigslist a lot cheaper.

The link isn't showing up, but this is the one I've had success with down to -9F:

Just got 2 week old chicks, they only seem to drink when I nudge the feeder with my finger

My concern is close to that of KKane61. I posted this question elsewhere but since there is more traffic here, I will ask it again.

My chicks are about 2 weeks old. They try and drink from the horizontal nipples but are they strong enough to actually push it in and release the water? As soon as I press it in, the water does come out and the babies will come over to drink(they don't come rushing but will amble over) and I see them pecking the release button but I haven't actually seen any water come out. So, do I leave everything alone or do I go ahead and put the other crummy waterer back in? Thanks all for your help.

10 days and older will work just fine with the nipple water system. I have both vertical and horizontal and no problem at all. You just have to train them where the water is. I also have treader feeder. You only need to train the 1st group and the next generation just follow. I do like the horizontal better because no hanging require.

I trained them where the water was, but they still are not drinking. I initially tried 4 days ago, then tried again today for 2 hours so far, and they just don't seem to be figuring it out. They walk by and peck at it once in a while. It just does not look like they are getting anything.

When they figure it out, will they stand there for a while to get a few drinks like they do with the regular waterer?

I finally saw mine actually swallow after they pecked at the nozzle. Made me feel real good knowing that they were actually getting water. I like this way of watering knowing that shavings and poop aren't going into their water and then them ingesting it.

Took my 2.5 week olds about 30 min. Take there beak and peck it. And they will do the rest.
That's what I have in the Brooder.
