Where do you get you chickens from?

Personally I prefer breeders over feed stores or large scale hatcheries for specific breeds. I find too many people somehow end up with something totally different than what they originally thought they ordered. I like to see the parents, or what adult chickens are around, so I have a pretty good idea what I'm getting.

Totally agree. I get mine from a local hatchery in town as pullets.

Cool, I personally think pullets are the best because you don't have to worry about the hassle of taking care of chicks and you already know the gender.

Wow, nice to know that there are some places that don't slaughter birds as soon as egg production drops.
 
I got my RIR pullets from a 4-H kid in a neighboring rural town. He was the only local source I could find who would let me return them if they turned out to be roos, though that's not as big a concern since they're not chicks. I first thought I'd adopt a couple from the local SPCA or from a local farm animal rescue, but since I can only have three hens max, I really wanted the productive egg laying years ahead of them. I found some breeders who had some beautiful breeds, all organic, everything I would be interested in except the "no return" policy if they weren't hens. Our neighborhood has a single feral rooster, which was likely dumped here. I wasn't going to add to him and don't really know any farmers I can give a rooster to.
