Day 23 - No Pipping

Violoa,

We are using the reservoirs in the bottom of the bator. There is quite a bit of surface area, but she said it was drying up quickly. I will open it up if there are no pips tonight and look at it closer. I will probably fill all reservoirs if they aren't already filled then open up the cord hole and a vent on top if you think it needs it. I certainly don't want to drown them after we have come so far.

The center water wells are good because they are directly centered in the incubator. I have a theory that using a sponge on 1 side of the incubator affects the eggs closest to it differently than the eggs furthest from it.

check out the link in my signature "the dry incubation method." He talks about the vent plugs, I believe his method is 1 plug in until day 18, then he removes the remaining plug (both plugs out during hatch). I also remove both plugs (entire incubation though).

for me personally, in oregon, I believe that by having the vent plugs out allows the incubator to regulate off the room's humidity easier. we have about 30-40% humidity in my house in oregon so that works well for me. what works for me doesn't necessarily have to work for everyone.

by the way, while you are opening the incubator, it doesn't hurt to candle them and see what you can see - since they are late, I know I would be candling them. again, the only risk here is if an egg has pipped, until then, they are not open to air.

I think our humidity is around the same. I will check out that link.

I agree on candling. I have really wanted to, but didn't want to bother them too much. If any have pipped, I will keep it closed up.

In my Styrofoam cooler I have the wire inside set above the bottom about 3/4 of an inch, I just add water to the bottom of the cooler and it never touches the eggs, it keeps the humidity perfect. I have a hole near the bottom so I can add water with a syringe if I have to.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am not sure why, but these eggs are hatching at a very delayed rate. We had 7 hatch over the weekend and baby #8 is on its way out of the shell now. My son and I spent Friday night in his Pre-K room w/ the teacher watching the first one hatch. It was such a great experience!

chick pics please!

late hatching sounds like the temperature may be too low? make sure to take the temperature reading at the top of the eggs. the thermometer on the incubator takes the temperature higher than this level. here is a link, maybe it will help troubleshoot: http://msucares.com/poultry/reproductions/trouble.html#LH
