Anyone else get annoyed when the people around you are constantly on the cell phone?

I used to be like a lot of you guys in my thoughts regarding phones. I still dislike when people interrupt your conversation to text or answer a phone call, but I'm now in a job/school program that uses phones as a sort of pager system and many of my teachers expect us to check email regularly throughout the day. So it has become more common for me to see people on their cell phones quite a bit.

I'm having an idea--next time we have a family gathering, I think I'm going to have a basket to collect the phones at the door. No one in my family is that indispensable they can't be out of touch for a few hours. I think I'm the only one that's ever on call, and I wouldn't be having a gathering if I'm on call, so problem solved!

It has been almost 10 years since this post and nothing feels like it has changed (if anything it’s worse.)
Wondering how everyone has coped & if you ever gave into the phones & facebook or if you’re still going strong? I ask because I feel like I suffer from smart phone addiction but I am very self aware of it and delete my social media apps when it gets bad. Still, the texts and ability to browse for anything I want is hard to dial back.
I once stopped engaging through text and social media, and suddenly found myself very isolated from friends and family who continued to use both and just didn’t think to call me or email or include me “in the know” of things. It’s really very difficult to cut the cord when it’s the new normal means of communication.

It's a sad reality
