1st Flock :)

So glad they are all doing well, heading into the coop at night and all is well. Enjoy your flock!

Thanks! We're kind of spoiled...their previous owner was very hands-on and routine with the flock, and so they know to go into the coop when it starts getting dark. Unfortunately, they've learned from experience...two of their sisters were taken by predators while still under their old management.

But all 10 are safe-n-sound with us (so far, so good!).

Quote: This is how my birds are. I am very hands on and lead them all into the coop at night, make sure they all get their drinkies at night, make sure they are all snuggled on the roost bar before the lights go out....LOL I don't think my birds could survive what most normal chickens flocks do. I think I have have ruined my birds.

Sounds like your flock is spoiled...lucky ladies/gents.

We want to keep ours friendly and trusting, since we're not something they should fear...but I kind of like watching them do their own thing. I am very glad they head to bed on their own. We've had to herd them in slightly earlier than normal a night or two, and that (for just one person) is quite the exercise. They have free run of approximately 400sq/ft of our yard, and they can circumnavigate their coop...so it's a whole lot of running 'round in circles to get them in by hand.

HELP: We're at a crossroads at the moment...
hu.gif

Aflac, our token Pekin duck, appears to be a drake. He currently has one curled tail feather & has been trying to mount his favorite of the Three Musketeers (White Crested) for a couple of days now (with her permission, of course). Now we must make a decision...

(1) Keep Aflac, and try to hatch & sell the babies.
(2) Cull Aflac, and have my first duck dinner.
(3) Sell Aflac, and try to maintain an all female flock.

Any suggestions?

Love the name Aflac!! LOL Always wanted a duck named Aflac. LOL I have no suggestions for you since I don't keep ducks. You might ask the duck experts in our duck section about this....

Good luck in what ever decision you make!

Thank you for all your help/suggestions. I am hopeful we have found a buyer for most, if not all, of our ducks. Selling to someone through BYC just feels good...ya'll LOVE your birds! Our daughter is a little bummed to get rid of the ducks, but she favors the chickens more anyway & is quite excited to get new chicks after the ducks are gone. I'm glad we decided to do this so soon after getting our flock (only had them all two weeks now)...but how would we have known we were more chicken people than duck people without giving it a try first? Looking forward to a quieter & cleaner run after the ducks go to their new home.

Oh, I hope you can find a buyer thru BYC. Then you know they are going to a good home. Good luck!

Today our flock was split in half. We found our ducks a great home (through BYC) & our chickens don't know what to do with all the extra space. :p

Looks like our White Leghorn has been our trusty layer...and today, before the ducks left, one of the White Crested laid an egg for us as well. WooHoo!

Update: Looks like it was one of the White Crested & the Black Crested who were laying our eggs. As suspected, all of our pullets are still too young. Oh well...we can wait for more fresh eggs.
