We have 12 chicks 5 weeks old. 6 have feathers, 6 still in the process. It gets below freezing at night. When is it safe for me to put them out in the coop? They are in a pen in the basement right now.

6 to 8 weeks is the age range usually given, but plenty of people put them out earlier than that - or raise them outdoors from day one, when they are set up to provide heat at first. Have you started acclimating them to the outside by taking them out for outings during the day? I assume they have no heat lamp in the basement any more. If they have some thick hay in the coop to snuggle into, it will make it a bit easier on them. It's hard to put an exact number on this.
