My little old Modern Game rooster has had some crud in his eyes, mainly the right, for a while, along with some tough boogers in his right nostril. Other than that, he's still really spry, eats and drinks and does anything a healthy chicken would do. I thought this was just something that came with old age, as he's about nine or so, but after doing more research about chickens with mucous in their eyes and scabs and what-not, I'm getting a bit more suspicious about what might be causing this. No one else in his flock is ill at all either, it's just him with his nostril and eyes. What should do to treat his eyes and nose? How concerned should I be?

He could have mycoplasma (CRD,) coryza, or ILT, and there are others. Tylan50 injectable 1 ml for over 5 lb into the breast muscle daily for 3-5 days. If he has a bad odor around his head, it may be coryza, and you can use Tylan, but Dimethox or Sulmet will also treat it. Of course these are contagious and carrier disease, so most people would cull, but at least separate him. Ahhh, thank you. This does, unfortunately, sound like coryza, which was what I was afraid of... For a bird of 24-27 ounces, what would the dosage of Tylan50 be? That, and because he is soooo close to his flock, how should I go about separating him without distressing him and his group?

You link seems to be broken, too.

Just a quick question - would thinning go hand in hand with a bad bout (or former bad bout) of coryza? My little guy is getting incredibly thin and pale. He's old, so it's not super shocking, but I'm curious. Could this be worms, now?

I just want him to be comfortable; I worry about him a lot. Thanks.

If you have a vet that would let you bring in an early morning stool sample from him they could check it for worms and clostridium which can cause enteritis. They could also tell you if he may have an underlying case of coccidiosis. Most chickens have a few worms, but they (and those other problems) can cause weight loss. Also coryza is a chronic disease, so it may come back on him whenever he is stressed.
