Do they "mind" the egg gathering?

Assuming that what you have are pullets (girls), one thing to look for is comb/wattle development. Young birds have yellowish to pinkish, undeveloped wattles and combs, these get larger and turn blood red at about the time the pullet reaches Point of Lay. The comb size and shape varies quite a bit depending on breed, but the red color pretty much signals maturity, so when you see that, you know egg laying isn't far off.

Thanks. I want to now EVERYTHING! SO many questions. Internet frequently contradicts itself and leaves me more confused. I am in an area of Ohio where there is likely not another chicken for 50 miles. I am a city boy with a country heart. I secretly have a pig, way to many dogs, the chickens, lizards and cats. I have been disabled/ wheel chair bound since I was 22 (car accident) and my animals (and wife) are my life. I am feeling like the chicken world is more complicated than it might actually be. Maybe I need to read less and watch/learn by my chicks examples. Just want to do right by them and make sure they are happy!

Chickens certainly can be addicting! Feel free to ask away!

Bunnylady has some good advice about the combs/wattles. Otherwise, I would just suggest sticking the golf balls in there around 5 or 6 months of age. That way they will see them prior to laying! Most of the time, I find my birds will lay in the nest boxes anyway because they like to be closed in and have some privacy from the other birds.

Can my chickens really ONLY be 7 weeks old? They look so big.

They do grow fast! I had two pullets given to me about a month ago. I'm not sure how old they were ( they said they thought they were 3 mos but didn't seem too sure) but they have really grown in the month I've had them. I wish there was a way to tell their age. I am new to chickens as well and your right, there is a lot of info out there. I get panicked reading about some of the things that can go wrong with them. Especially the peeps as I have 4 babies coming this week. One day at a time I guess, I'm glad I found this site as I know I will be in need if advice someday soon! lol

. By the way, how do you secretly have a pig? lol Any pics of it?

Rosie the Pig lives in a dog kennel attached to a heated shed with a heated dog house as well. She lives happily with 2 of our 7 dogs. Besides family/friends no one knows she is there. She is quiet and in nestled nicely in a wooded area in the back yard.

Oh my goodness I love it! She is adorable! I have the two hens and 4 peeps coming this week. Also have 2 inside cats and 2 outside cats. I would love a couple of goats but I have no building for them and no finances to build one so alas no goats for me...I still have to get a coop built for my chickens!
