I have a huge problem on my hands! I purchased 8 Silkie chics over a month ago. Within a few days 1 died... Then 3 more passed... I had no idea I was buying sick babies! Upon research I'm sure they have a respiratory infection which I got tetracycline to put n their water for 7 days. The one that kept his eyes closed all the time due to eye discharge is now keeping them open so the meds helped some. All the babies that passed had pasty butt, popping n wheezing while breathing, sleepy n watery bubbly eyes... My problem has grown due to the fact that my existing flock of hens is showing signs of the same infection. Today while I had them out I seen bubbles n 1 eye of my girl Sparkles... Same as the babies!!!!! Now as I do with all my babies I raise them n a brooder n my bedroom... They r never around my other chickens or their coop for months.... I must of carried the infection to the coop on my clothes or shoes!!!! I desperately need some help knowing what to do... I can't find a chicken vet to save life! I can't bare losing any more of my Lil angels! I had the tetracycline on hand so I made them up a mixture n their water for now but since the 1 baby never fully got better after 7 days on it I think I'd like to try something else... I don't know.... After raising chickens for 6 yrs I've never encountered illness.... This is awful!!!!! :-( Also 1 of my geese (my best buddy) lives n the coop with the chickens.... Will he get this too???? I'm kind of freaking out right now!!! But fellow chicken/geese lovers can understand... Lol... Thank u for ur time reading this. I look forward to hearing ur advice....

Welcome to BYC. Tetracycline is not terribly effective against respiratory diseases due to a bad taste, resistant disease strains, and apparently it needs vitamin C to be effective. Tylan 50 injectable is very good, and Gallimycin (erythromycin) is good in water. You should close your flock, and I would recommend that you get a chick tested or necropsied by your state vet for MG, coryza, infectious bronchitis, and ILT. The state vet czn tell you what diseases may be found more often in your area. Sorry that you are dealing with this.

Thanks for ur reply. I called my local farm store they have sulfadimethoxine n powder form. What so u think of this? Will it be afective? If so can I give it to my goose? Can geese even catch this infection from chickens?

1 baby chic I buried... The other 3 r in my freezer... I can't have them tested since they've been frozen right? I read to keep them cold but not frozen. I had no knowledge of this til after I froze them.
