Hi I wanted to raise Geese and sell their eggs for extra money - and because I love Geese. Well I actually have never raised any before so I wanted some recommendations on here which ones lay the largest eggs and the most, how to raise them, were to by feed, ect...

THANKS!

Hi there.....I am faily new to geese (have 5 Sebastopols and my bf has Embden and Africans) but I have ad that White Chinese are the most prolific egg layers. I will tell you that people are not going to be knocking down your door to buy goose eggs.....my girls started laying in the Winter and I had soooooo many eggs...along with my Muscovy hens that continued to lay throughout the colder months as well. I sell more duck and quail eggs than anything but wound up eating and giving away most of my goose eggs sadly. Maybe its just the area I live in.....plus, I really haven't marketed them well enough. As these will no doubt be your pets for many years, I would just find a breed(s) that interest you in looks/size/temperament etc. and choose that way. Any good feed store will have a gamebird starter.....diet is always an interesting topic but I give a 24% crumble ( for babies) and introduce fresh greens after a week......that's for my ducks as well. My birds are in excellent weight and no wing/feet issues.A way you can save money AND provide your birds with nutritious food is to go to the produce section of your local supermarket and ask for greens. I pay $.50 - $1.00 for a jam packed bananna box full of "mostly organic" leaf lettuces, swiss chard, kale, etc. herbs like cilantro/parsley. And I also get goodies for myself like spring onions, mushrooms, peppers, herbs, etc. If it isn't pretty enough to put out on the display, in the trash it goes.

Hope my rambling was a little helpful. :)

If your purpose if to raise extra money- you may want to do a little research before you begin. Do you have other waterfowl already? Housing, feed etc. costs and I think you would need to sell lots of eggs just to break even. Not to be discouraging, I love my ducks and geese, but even if I sold all the duck eggs, I don't think it would pay for the feed for the flock.

I quite agree, Nyssa. Mine all cost me much more to keep than I get from any sales...and mine are free-ranging, just have a little corn twice a day.

Thank you ALL for your advice! I might change my mind and do Chickens since I have no experience with water fowl. I just need something that won't lay the same color of eggs as my family's chickens so I can decipher the difference, and only sell mine. My mother is helping me out with selling at the local farmers market which she has experience with.

Easter eggers lay blue-green eggs, and are usually quite nice chickens.
I think geese won´t earn you as much in eggs as chickens, either, as geese have a short breeding season, unlike chickens. Pekin ducks are good producers of eggs, though. Different to geese.

Oh my god I feel SO stupid!!!!! I ment ducks, I'm thinking of getting ducks. O////O

OK, pekin ducks are good. Get onto the duck threads and read up and post questions there, then.

Jenni........I have Muscovy and Runner ducks and they lay eggs constantly. The Runners are a lightweight duck and adorable but a tad skittish (though mine come running to me when they know I have treats. LoL) I must admit....I LOVE my Muscovies......they are the quietest birds, wag their tails like a dog, and produce jumbo eggs.

Something else you might consider........quail. I raise them and the hens lay an egg a day like clockwork. Super easy little birds to care for...don't need a lot of space, and Google the health benefits of quail eggs....you'll be amazed. They are beautiful eggs to begin with.....rich in flavor like a duck egg but the health qualities are what got me interested. I eat them cooked but each morning I have 5 raw quail.eggs, in my shaker cup with maybe a tbls of OJ. Delicious....tastes like a custard. Anyway, quail eggs are something to consider as well.
