What age to start BOSS?

BOSS = Black oil sunflower seeds. I have broodies with babies that eat it around a month old. As long as they have grit it's fine. Maybe every few days to start, or I like to sprout it for the babies to get use to greens. It's grows really quickly. Big and small, chickens love any kind of sprouts.

hi, my chicks are approx. 3 months old and still on chic starter. They go out in their run and eat green weeds. Do I need to start giving them grit and if so do I purchase it at the feed store and how much do I give them? thanks for your help.

Yes, they need to have some sort of grit if they are eating anything besides their chick feed. If you don't have tiny pebbles/rocks on your property, then yes, buy it a your local chicken/feed store.

ok but how often and how much should I give them? do I throw it out to them in the run or give it to them with their feed??? I read somewhere that some sand in their outdoor run would work as scratch. is that true? thanks for your help.

Leave it out in a small dish all day. Sand can in no way substitute scratch. Grit can though.

What is the difference between grit and scratch and when should I start giving them scratch? Ok, I should be giving the Grit in a pan all day every day yes? . I can give them Sand in place of scratch yes?

I was able to find grit starter at my local feed store, its ground up really fine and my chicks,. Are doing really well on it even the younger ones.
I like the idea of sprouting the boss seeds.. :)
