Starting a chicken coop in Nova Scotia, Canada

Welcome to BYC!

We're glad to have you.

Hello there HennyPenny, I am in Nova Scotia also, New Glasgow. Our chickens are 9 weeks old. We love everyone of them. We never had chickens before and have become VERY attached. They are all quite tame and love people.
We have one hen - Susie Q, that does not play well with others. She is in a large dog cage in our house. YES people in our house ! We are hoping that when she goes to the hen house to live she will be old enough and will have stopped her bad bum pecking ways. Hopefully, maybe, our rooster Max will keep her in line. He is rather docile.
Up until today my hubby said we have to give her away if she does not behave when we return her to the coop. I didn't say much, I just kept telling him "well just wait and see what happens when we put her back in the coop". I am very attached to Susie Q. She has been out of the coop (this time) for at least 3 weeks. However during these 3 weeks I let her run around the house for short periods. She has become very tame and will jump up on the couch beside me, run up on the arm, jump over to my hubby's chair. He put a towel on his knee and sets her on it and she lays down and stretches her dear little head over his belly and falls asleep, trilling all the time. Susie Q loves to have her chin rubbed, she twills constantly. Even when our cat walks by her cage. She loves our cat. Now Scratchy is not impressed, but she puts up with her.
In the meantime, I bought a dog house on Kijiji and hubby remodelled it for SusieQ. She has a new chicken door, a run, and a hatch on the roof so we can put a window on it for her to get sunshine. She will be going in it by the weekend. But it won't keep her warm for the winter.
Today my hubby came home from work after speaking with a fellow chicken owner/lover who also had a bum pecker. He just divided off part of his coop for the bad girl. So, yes you know it, Garry said to me " I just can't get rid of her". I knew it would happen! I could see he was getting attached. Susie Q just loves him. Yippie Susie Q stays. So that is our chicken story Henny Penny. I hope you have as much fun with your chickens too. We have 18 RIR hens and 1 rooster (we hope only one).
Your chickens will love attention too. I never new chickens could be so sweet and adorable. How many do you have Henny Penny?

Hi from Kingston, Nova Scotia. Chickens really are a lot of fun. Years ago I had 6 hens and a roo. I am just getting back into chickens and have realized how much I missed them. I have two Sicilian Buttercup hens and am looking for a roo. They are a smaller bird and give a smaller egg. My girls are grown, so it is just my husband and I so we do not need too many eggs, but my grand daughters really love them.

Hi Henny Penny,
It is great you are getting back into chickens. Can't say that I have ever seen a Sicilian Buttercup. They are beautiful in your pics.
If you and your husband are ever up our way please drop in and meet our chickens :)...(and me and hubby too). We started to get eggs on Saturday past. 2 each day since. It is wonderful. Best of luck with your chickens.
