I have a broody mama sitting on 7 eggs. They are due to hatch soon-this is day 19. I went out to refresh her water and food-there are now only 6 eggs and no sign that there was ever a 7th. I didn't separate her from the rest of the flock in time. So I don't know who is killing the eggs. I have 1 roo and 5 hens.

Do you have a small dog? My dog steals eggs and tries to sneak them into the house for a little snack. I'm really sorry. I hope this helps.

I bet you have a snake taking your eggs. Rat snakes really enjoy eggs. We use a spray foam insulation called "The Good Stuff" to close up holes and gaps where a snake cAn get through.. We get it at Home Depot. Rat snakes are also known as chicken snakes. They have a very strong body and can get themselves vertical and hook their upper body onto a ledge then pull their lower body up. They can get very high into a coop using that system. They will eat your baby birds and the bigger snakes can eat your adult birds. We have a horse farm with a large hay barn... The rat snakes hide in the stacks of hay. Two weeks ago we removed two 3 foot snakes and one 5 foot+ rat snake. We knew we had a snake (was not expecting 3) when three eggs vanished over two days and one keet vanished. The snakes were too large for our guinea hens to keep away. We moved the bird's residence into the coop vs. in the hay barn. The birds picked hanging out in the hay barn ... But they have happily been using the coop.
All the best.

I live in the city limits of Liberty, MO. I have a very small coop as you can see,and only 3 hens. I was given a dozen fertilized eggs and after 2 weeks, I'm down to only 8. I have a fenced pen and lock up the coop at night. How small of a place can a rat snake get through? I don'really seem to have any noticeable gaps in the coop. I haven't found any shells of a broken eggs but a small smug of yolk. Could my other 2 hens be the culprits? Any ideas on where my eggs have disappeared?

Sounds like you have a rat snake taking them. They can fit into tiny little gaps in the pen's construction or even under the edges of the pen. The rat snakes can really get around! You may want to make sure the snake is not curled up in a tiny, hidden, spot inside your pen too. We use spray foam insulation ... You can get it at home depot or lowes. It is called "The good stuff" or "The great stuff". It is super, super easy to use.. Inexpensive and a little goes a long way. It dries quickly just be sure your birds to not get into it before it dries.
