So I have bobwhites, northern and ten reds. They have been together since last year. I have one male that looks like a Red with all of those characteristics EXCEPT it has a faint white line on his head like a regular bob. Two things; Does this happen often and do you think it would breed true? (Produce another like that). Freak of nature?

Would love to try to breed another like that. Not sure I could or if it would even happen.

I cannot remember where I read the article on-line last week, but it discussed the reds in the wild from the earlier days. It suggested that here in TN that the reds were an offspring from the Bob whites, found locally in a specific area of some plantation. It motioned that test were done and it was determined that they were lesser of a fl yer, etc but most likely from the bob whites.

While I do not know much about the current strains of reds, from what I read in the article, and to use euphemism of paraphrase, the reds would be like an albino in nature. In such I would suspect that (based on the article) that you are seeing the Bob White coming out of the reds.

If I can I will try to find the article and post the link ..... it may be a couple of days.....weeks......?

Thanks for the link, I just read it. Also love your setters. English? I have Labs and a Brit. I got into quail for my dog training but also now have some to just keep around - I love the call and look of them. I am originally from NC but now live in Oregon. Was familiar with the bobs from being a kid back east. This is the first two birds I have seen with the white line on the red body. Thinking it still might be a familiar oddity. Trying to figure a way to separate and keep these birds to see what happens with them with next years eggs!
