Sleepy hen, doesn't lay, drinks excessively, watery diarrhea--treat for bacterial infection?

pugasaurusrex....First of all thank you very much for purchasing and using Zyfendtm A in your birds. They have joined millions of organic/natural certified layers and other backyard birds who are enjoying it's benefits across the United States without having to throw away the eggs nor worry about residues.

While I cannot say that what you are seeing in your Rhode Island Red is due to internal parasites, being out on soil creates the potential for picking up worms. Using Zyfend A, as labeled, 1 week out of every month when parasites can cause problems can help address worm related issues.

On the other hand, it sounds like the diarrhea may be more pathogen driven, especially if additional birds are having diarrhea too. Diarrhea usually indicates the presence of a pathogen that is causing digestive disease. One disease that can cause the watery, greenish diarrhea is necrotic enteritis, caused by clostridium perfringens. Our HealthyFlocktm Tabs is designed to help prevent those infections and help address the problem when infected. It contains multiple ingredients designed to target pathogens like e. Coli, salmonella and clostridium which can cause digestive disease and, support the immune system in order to help prevent infection and speed recovery.

Take a look at our sponsor page here on Backyardchickens.com or our website for more detailed information that may be helpful for you.

As always you may also contact me directly if there is any additional information I can provide. We work closely with top poultry veterinarians and nutritionists in the industry. My contact information can be found on our website.

Hope this information helps! Good luck!

I have a hen with the same issue, she's pale and lethargic, drinking excessively but seems to be eating well.
I can't seem to find any of the suggested wormer treatments over here though (New Zealand) so I have dosed her with aviverm, it's supposed to treat capillary worm which is what I suspected she might have.......any other ideas?

Aviverm is levamisole which treats many different types of roundworms, a very good wormer.

glad i saw this post. i have a rhode island red that seems to be doing the same thing. im going to try and pick up some wormer today and see if that helps her. thanks this site is great for help :)

It's been pretty cold outside, here in NW Mississippi. My hen is not laying right now, I suppose because of the cold. They rooster and the hen are about 15 months old. Since the hen is not laying, is this a good time to treat our tiny "Flock" with wormer? Or is it to cold out. Temp 20~38 F.
