Hello everyone

We will "talk chicken" all day long around here

I have Barred Rocks, Buff Orpington, and Rhode Island Reds which are almost 2 months old. In the brooders I have Easter Eggers, Salmon Faverolles, German Spitzhaubens, Black Jersey Giants, Egyptian Fayounis, Buff Brahamas, Blue Polish, also some Guineas and two Turkeys. A little bit of everything :) The learning center has been super helpful. Do you have a favorite type of chicken?

You have a nice mixed flock. I've had some of the same breeds you have over the years (Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Easter Eggers, Black Jersey Giants, Light Brahmas, and Golden Polish). I still keep a few Buff Orpingtons (I love their beauty and calm, gentle temperament) and Easter Eggers (because my granddaughter loves the colored eggs), but I have become very utilitarian in recent years and the majority of my flock consists of excellent layers. My favorite chickens are Black Sex Links (Black Stars) because they are hardy, friendly, egg laying machines. My favorite standard breed (BSLs are hybrids which do not breed true) is the Black Australorp because they are very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the brown egg laying breeds. My 6 year old (almost 7) granddaughter names our hens after Disney princesses, and has turned our Orpington and Australorps into pets.) Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Good luck with your flock.
