Hi, everyone! I'm new to chickens but not BYC. I've been lurking for a year and reading up on raising chickens so I would feel better prepared for when I get my girls, which finally happened last week!

My husband and I are excited to have our 5 Backyard Browns. He spent almost a year, with many interruptions, building our coop, but our girls are so worth it. We set up a web cam so I can keep an eye on them, and on days I work from home, I seriously consider taking my laptop out to work from a lawn chair just so I can hear them talking to ech other.

I'd like to thank all the posters on BYC for all that I've learned along the way. I felt much better prepared for setting up feeding and watering systems, protecting my chickens from predators, and just generally keeping them healthy.

I do have a question about an odd egg, so I thought I'd toss it out here. We've had 8 eggs so far, but today one came out with a cloudy, white membrane around it. Under it was the usual hard shell. I don't know which chicken laid it, but no one seems to be in distress at the moment. I've tried to find out what the membrane means, but I'm not having any luck finding what it is. Any thoughts?

Welcome to BYC! And congrats on your first chickens :)

How old are they? Sometimes in the beginning an odd ball is layed. What are you using as feed?

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

X3 If these are young birds, sometimes it takes a while for them to get their egg laying machines in gear. If this is an adult hen, sometimes funky eggs to happen. Keep an eye out and if it becomes a habit with one of them, you may want to figure out who is laying this egg and get down to the bottom of the issue.

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Thanks!

So far they are getting only the Dumor poultry layer crumbles, and a tomato wedge as treat and to see if any of them would like it. The girls are about 26 weeks old, so they are fairly new to egg laying. Should we pitch the egg, or are oddballs OK to eat? We can certainly live without it, but I don't want to needlessly waste it, either.

Wow, you all are fast! It took me this long to respond, anthere were two other posts already. You all are quite a helpful bunch. :)

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! The odd egg should be fine to eat. New layers especially will lay a lot of odd or funny eggs, always a surprise.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. The other BYC members have given you some good advice. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
