Cream Legbars??

Ok, so I have had several breeds of Chickens in my life, & right now I raise Brahmas, but I have never had Cream Legbars & know little about them. I have found a flock (1 roo/3 hens) & am thinking of buying them. The person wants $100 for the flock. My questions are, what do you think about this breed? Is this a good price? Also, I have read that there is some discrepancy about the standard in this breed & was wondering what I should be aware of? I am going to try to post pics of the flock. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I just got some cream legbars. I have a flock of 1 roo and 3hens. $100 is a very decent price for that flock. Some hatchery charge $40 a chick. You should know that this breed is quite flighty. As for standards there are many different assumptions of a "normal" cream legbar. I would just try to avoid to much white or copper.

Does anyone live near St. Catharines, ON?

Thank you for the info. i just know nothing about them except what I've read. I think I will go ahead & get them tomorrow. What the hey? If I don't like them, I can always sell them right? Thanks again.

Cream Legbars are not a recognized breed as of yet. There is a large group of people working on the standard and many people are starting to bring Cream Legbars to shows to get them out there and in the eyes of the judges.

The pics of your flock are hard to get a good idea in that lighting. My one suggestion that may help you is to ask the seller if the offspring of this quad produce cream, gold or both cream and gold offspring. They look old enough that they may have hatched from them. It looks as though the rooster is gold but he may carry the cream gene. As you breed forward you will want to remove any gold birds from your breeding program. On roosters a good way to see if they are gold or cream is to open the wing and if it is free from color and only showing gray and white he is cream if it shows rust, chestnut, ginger etc he is gold(but may carry cream). Hens you can tell in the hackle. Cream hens will have very light creamy butter hackles almost silver but with that hint of butter color. Gold hens will show very yellow/rusty tone hackles. I also noticed in my birds that my cream pullets have a cooler body tone more grayish in color and the few gold pullets I hatched grew up to have a warmer brownish tone. That is in my specific birds though and may not apply to others.

Also just for your records you may want to ask the seller how closely related the rooster is to the hens.

Over all looks like a good starter flock. That rooster(though too colorful) has many good qualities.

Below is the link to the Cream Legbar Club. There you will also find the drafts of the Standard for the Cream Legbar. Yes some people may not agree on the Standard because it is being drafted aiming toward a less colorful bird. Some people want to breed toward color and to each there own but the Standard is being drawn up and many breeders are doing a great job getting their birds as close to that standard as possible. I am one that is following the proposed standard to the best of my ability.

Sorry it has been so long with a reply. I hadn't realized anyone else has posted. Thank you for the info. The lady I bought the Legbars from didn't know much about Chickens at all. She said she got them from a breeder in N GA. She only had them for eggs (to eat) & never hatched any from them. I have a few pics of them on my page, not sure how to post on here? I don't have an incubator at this time but would def like to hatch some in the future. The hens are sweet but the roo is a meany. He tries to spur us when we go outside. lol Good thing we don't mind that sort of stuff. I have read that some people were getting out of the Legbars because of the standard being so hokey. I like them so far, & although I would prefer to stay with a standard, i'm not a person who shows or anything like that so it doesn't matter if they're not to standard i guess. My girls do look like pics I've seen of the standard though, but my bird's crests aren't so pronounced. Anyway, thanks again. I'm always learning.
