I'm planning on Black Australorp currently. They seem to be top egg producers. I considered RI Reds but decided that the roosters have too much of a reputation. I've yet to find another dual purpose breed that can out lay them. You know of any?

I have raised Black Australorps for years (along with dozens of other breeds) and there are no dual purpose breeds that can outlay them. A BA holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while none of mine has ever reached that kind of production (and likely never will), I have had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year. There are a couple of hybrids that can outlay them, Black Sex Links and Red Sex Links. These sex links can pretty consistently churn out over 300 eggs in a year (although none of them have ever reached that BA record of 364 eggs in 365 days), but sex link chickens won't breed true, so you would have to keep re-supplying your stock by ordering from a hatchery.

I'd actually like to heritage maybe nix in some show quality. I've only found one person with heritage for a whopping $20 an egg! I've found one of the major suppliers appear to offer "show quality" but you have to wonder what you're really getting.
