Are low roosting poles ok in brooder at one week old?

Jokingly, my husband stuck a few old wooden tomato stakes through the vent holes of the upside down dog crate we're using as a brooder, maybe 3" off the ground. He did this when they were two days old and many have been using them!!!

I think it's great--is there any reason why I shouldn't have them in there this young? Jumping down this young ok? They kind of flap their way up and down and most make the roosts!

I don't see any problem at all. Just make sure that the "roost" you use is large enough for their feet. As they grow, so should the circumference of the roost.

We did something similar and they really seemed to like it! I figured that as long as they had enough room to get up and get down safely, we'd be ok! We had a nice layer of shavings on the floor to absorb any bumps on the jump down. They're 14 weeks now and are thriving so i don't think it affected them negatively in any way!

I put a 1"x1" (approximately) in with mine it was easier for them to stand on but they started at a few days too it's cute! We just raised it as they got bigger.
