Anyone with an *Indoor Pet Bobwhite Quail*?? Beginner questions from Long Island, NY

Anyone else, please feel free to chime in. I'd love to know what feed everyone is feeding their Bobs. Specifically the hens.
I'm limited to what I can find here in the 'burbs of NY.

Hi!
Quincy gets a mix of "free range hen mix" it has a mix of sunflower seeds, corn, things that look like wheat, split peas and legumes, raw rolled oats (this was her emergency baby food along with raw almonds), bird seed and of course all the "treats" like kale, veggies in general and veggie flowers etc.
She is a fiend for anything salty, sweet and fatty, but I have hopes she will live to a very old age so those are off limits unless my cake crumbs make it to the floor. She has been caught eating salt straight out the salt bowl, pecking through cling film to eat cake and sneaking beakfuls of butter from the open butter dish. When she gets told off she makes oily beak noises whilst just looking at you with this look of mmmm sticky butter.
Hope this helps.
Oh and sometimes I sprout mug beans, mustard seeds and brown lentils for her to mix it up a little.
She does get a bit of garden time too so eats plenty of bugs and stones.

Yum, that mix sounds delish! All I've been able to find here is processed feed. I found a farm nearby that sells chicken feed. I may go today and see. Today is my daughter's 14 birthday. We broke out a big container of cheese balls to snack on. They are round cheese doodles - salty junk food - if that helps. I thought of Quincy and tossed one to Omelette. So my girls and I, the hedgehog, and Omelette were all eating cheese balls! I just found Omelette finishing hers this morning. She's not big on cake (yet), but loves her broccoli and strawberries. She snacks a bit on corn, squash, lettuce, sunflower seed meat, and whatever berries I find growing in the yard. I almost gave her avocado but remembered that's a big no-no. It's funny to watch her try something she doesn't like - she wipes her beak over and over on the pine bedding! Yesterday I gave her some small pebbles for grit for the first time. And I ordered oyster shell.

Quincy sounds like such a character! Stealing salt and butter - smart bird.

Yesterday Omelette added a new chirp to her repertoire. I think she may have been imitating me calling the cat! Is that possible? It was like a series of quick kissy noises.

Does Quincy cry for you? I think Omelette has separation anxiety. When we leave the living room at night, or if she wakes early, she calls and it can get VERY loud. Usually I just talk to her and she quiets down. She did it as we three were standing at the door on our way out. That was a first. She knew we were leaving and was NOT happy. It's sad and sweet.

Oh don't encourage the cake, we all know it's not a good habit!

They have an amazing repertoire of sounds don't they. We love them!

Yes Quincy can get very loud if she wants our attention. But no Quincy doesn't seem to suffer from separation anxiety anymore. When she was younger, what you described was definitely a thing. She seems to have really calmed down though, loves company and her own space at different times. Often when she could hear we had arrived home and had not come to greet her yet was when the yelling would occur....
Not sure what to advise really...

I mentioned all this to my partner yesterday and he remembered I used to swaddle the quail when I needed to be hands free.
I used to wrap her in a light cotton cloth to make her feel cozy (with a clear exit) and "put her to bed" back when she still lived predominately in her box.
Quincy doesn't like the hair drier either!

As promised, Quincy's "shack". She hops in and out when she wishes when it's open like this. We store a drum kit underneath, sometimes this functions a bit like a staircase for her.
If you want to see more pictures of Q you needn't sign up to instagram, it works on computers :)

I love it! It's really pretty. I'm not showing Omelette. Don't want her to get jealous and fly away!

Ok, so I just checked out Quinctagram and loved every pic/video. So now I don't feel so alone :) I'm not the only one with a pet Quail! I have quite a few favorites. The one with her wings outstretched- what a great shot. And O does that throat thing too - when she's nervous or testing her environment. Ok, that settles it. Omelette needs her own instagram. Now I have something to do with all these pics/videos.

Omelette is trying to parrot noises. I'm sure of it now. When my daughter texted me yesterday, Omelette tried to recreate the sound. It was so funny. Others too.
