How do i know if my hen is broody???

Okay another question (sorry for asking all if these I have never had a broody hen) when and if the eggs hatch should I keep her in the pen with the chicks till they get bigger to make sure they don't get attacked or lost or let them out with the hen
Yes, keep the chicks in the pen until they are pretty big. Otherwise, the other birds might hurt them, despite the mother hen trying to protect her offspring.

Bobby hatched some eggs

How do you know if your eggs are alive

I see this is an old thread. You can candle them (go in dark room and shine a flashlight into them) and see if there are veins, 'big glob' or life. You can google what a candled egg will look like at different stages. this is only after the eggs have started to develop. I don't think you can do that with a freshly laid egg.
