November Hatch-A-Long (2014)

I went into lockdown tonight around 7pm. Lockdown wasn't technically until tomorrow AM, but since I have 2 Serama Eggs in this hatch with HUGE aircells and moving babies, I decided to split the difference and start tonight.

I'm headed into lockdown with:

2 Serama
2 Blue Isbar
2 Blue/Black/Splash Jersey Giant
5 Black Copper Maran (very unsure on these guys.. can't see much)
3 Olive Eggers... one with a side aircell

we shall see what happens in the next few days... I'm going to have to move the incubator Friday Night from work to home for the weekend. Moving the Brinsea this time instead of the Styrobator and its much more stable, so shouldn't be too big of a deal.

Good luck on lockdown everyone! Can't wait to see pics of the cute babies, especially the BCMs and Isbars. :)

Still watching everyone's adventures.

For the curious, I did have one silkie bantam who was a failure to thrive, who pulled through with a bit of care - mostly warm food, vitamins, and holding it up to drink. He or she (might be a he? It has some serious top-knot going on!) is energetic now and fights for food and the best perch - but is half the size of the other silkie bantams:

And when compared to the non-bantam breeds looks even tinier:

I'm very curious about the teeny one now, because it's a different colour to the others - we have one very 'partridge' looking one, and two white and yellow ones, but this one is a sort of gold all over.

So far we haven't lost any, and today we built a larger brooder for them than the cardboard box they're in, which I can post photos of once it's dry.

My duck eggs survived another power outage today... fortunately it didn't last long! They only have 6 days left. I have some frizzle serama eggs due on the same day. I had 5 more eggs from my hen I set yesterday... I was trying to resist but couldn't. I have gotten a couple frizzles and I want more!!

Day 6: lost a CL to blood ring. :( Thought as much yesterday, confirmed today. Might have lost the waxed egg, too. I'll hope for the best, but looks like a possible blood ring, no sign of a chick. Can't see anything in the green eggs! Running total of currently live embryos... CL: Cream Legbars, R1&R2: two varieties of Rhodebars, GC: Golden Cuckoo Marans

CL: 2/4 (green-gray-blue-ish eggs)
R1: 3/5 (light brown-ish eggs)
R2: ?/5 (green, almost light olive eggs)
GC: 4/6 (chocolate brown eggs; didn't count Waxy in the total live until I'm certain)

Notes to self: improve handling - no more dropped eggs! Try longer rest for the detached air cells; might improve reattachment - those with the worst air cells are the ones I don't see growth in.

So cute! I had four hatch from my ladylast hatch, one was assisted. That one took a couple days to get eating and drinking well, it's also half the size of the largest chick! He's feathering now - that was also slow to start, like I had that day old chick for a couple extra days. Will be interesting to see how yours feathers out since its color is so different from the others.
