Hello all! Winter has hit us hard and I'm struggling with to big babies that don't like the cold at all! On top of that, they are being very picky with food they would otherwise normally eat. I was told Timothy hay and Orchard hay are best for geese. But from what I have read, Orchard hay has very little protein.

Please help, should I order any of these? http://www.amazon.com/Oxbow-Animal-...?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1416714036&sr=1-3

Please advise :)

I buy orchard hay for my flock but I get the large bales at Southern states it has Timothy in it. They munch on it all fall winter and spring. I use a piece of plastic fencing and tie wrap it around the bale then we hang it where it won't get wet. even my chickens like to munch on it.

Is Southern States a store? Do they ship?
Southern states is a store but you should call around to some feed stores and ask if they sell orchard/timothy grass hay. Might look in the paper also. Bales are heavy but whats left over at end of the season I just let them have to lay around on and they still munch on it.

Great! I'll call the feed store in the morning! Thanks!
Horses also eat this hay so hopefully you can find some this year it was selling for over 8.00 a bale but the small bags like you showed in your post are pretty expensive for the small amount they are. I think I saw timothy hay for rabbits in Walmart for close to 6.00

Thanks Lydia! I don't mind buying a whole bale, it will last a long time! LOL
Even with my flock of over 30 it lasts all winter. so yep they will make bedding out of it too.

How are the feet looking today? my geese lay around on their feet alot when the temps get down below freezing. If only the feathers extended down their legs.

Their feet have been great the last 2 days because it warmed up into the upper 40's and has been raining. Today will be in the 50's but tonight. back into the 30's. The rest of the week will be 30's, but no snow. My sweet babies, I wish I could put snow boots on them LOL

I know I always feel so sorry for mine, seems the chickens fair better since they have smaller feet maybe? but last winter was a big test here snow and ICE for so long but thank the Lord no frost bite on anyones feet. But they sure were red when they'd get up an walk around. We're warming up to almost 60 today yesterday was 40's with rain but like you tomorrow starts the plunge downward, but it's nice when they and us can have breaks in between. Snow boots would be nice for them, yesterday I walked up on the hill to herd my ducks down for bed and slipped on the mud went down the hill on my bottom I'm sure everyone got a big kick out of that one. I was covered in slimy mud and wet from it pouring the rain. Early for me to fall. lol
