Twice over the last month we have found a group of stray cockerels have made their way onto the farm. We were able to re-home the first group but have discovered four more this week. All appear identical, beautiful, shiny, healthy cockerels but we already have enough roosters. If we could identify the breed I believe we can find the culprit as this is a small community and get them to stop abandoning their unwanted cockerels on our farm. It is unfortunate that when they showed up half the security cameras were not working or we would know already. We do not eat our animals so these cockerels are not only of no use to us but they cost us time and money to care for and re-home. They are nice looking birds and perhaps we can re-home them as a wanted breed rather then just send them to someone's dinner table. Thanks for your help!

They may be Black Australorps, or another black breed (or mix) like Jersey Giant or Orpington. If you could catch them and look at the bottoms of their feet, you might be able to narrow down the possible breeds. Australorps and Orpingtons have pinkish white feet bottoms, while Jersey Giants should have yellow pads.

I suspected they may have come from a local woman who raises Australorps but wanted a more qualified confirmation and wasn't sure what the difference was with some of the other large black breeds, Jersey Giants appeared to have much the same look. Thank you for the info, I will definitely check out their feet tonight and let you know what I find!

I agree so far with what everyone has said. Definitely check the bottoms of the feet and see what color they are. This is probably just me, but if I found out who was dumping them on me I'd give them back :p Makes them aware you know it's them and probably shames them. I bet they wouldn't do it again after that!

Finally remembered to check feet last night. Discovered two more abandoned cockerels! Dam these people!!!

This guy seems a little more yellow then the rest, but there was only one with this black & yellow color feet, Jersey Giant or a cross?

This is our adult Roo we got from the woman I suspect dumped all the stray cockerels on us, his feet look the same as the majority of the ones that were abandoned and he is suppose to be a PB Australorp.
