help please with dosage of Penicillin for rooster fight wounds

My rooster got beat up by another of my roosters a couple of days ago. I treated his wounds which are pretty bad, but he is hanging on, and I treated them with Betadine/water and then Neosporin on them. I fear that he will loose one of his eyes. I have been giving him Asprin in some high protein water with little sugar, but he is not drinking a lot of it, but maybe 1/2 syringe full. I finally broke down and gave him a shot last night of Penicillin 1cc as I saw on youtube video. He is loosing weight though as he is not eating and only drinking what I give him in the syringe. I gave him some smoothie/water a little bit ago but not much. He is very sleepy and I have smelled him some. He seems to be better today a tiny bit, but I need to know what dosage to give him for sure and how often if every day or every other day. It is Penicillin G Procraine or something like that. I have not weighed him, but will when I get him out next. I'm guessing 3 to 5 lb. I have read several threads and all the answers are so complicated and so much info I can't wade through it. I suppose that the numbers on the syringe are cc numbers mine starts with 5 then goes up to 1 and so on and so forth but it doesn't have any letters by the number just the number doesn't say cc or ml or anything like that. I hope I did it right with filling it up to 1. Can you please help me! Thanks so much. I will weigh him.

Ok I weighed him on digital scale and he is 3lb 8.3oz Please tell me that I didn't give him too much med or do something wrong! I was giving him come Cephlexin powder from broken open capsule disolved in the water with the asprin 1/4 asprin, Started giving him that the first day but I started smelling something so started the injection now and not giving the Cephlexin anymore since then just the asprin in water with the high protein powder and smoothie veggies.

If you used a syringe like the one pictured then it is for 3 ml or cc. The 1 is 1cc or ml. Procaine Penicillin G dosage for most chickens is anywhere between 1/10th of an ml to 1/2 ml. I usually recommend 1/4 ml, but many like to use 1/2 ml. a problem frequently encountered is over treatment, i suspect roosters are games.

I think he is a Bantam Cockerel. He is aprox 1 yr old or so 3 lb 8oz. I gave him 1cc of Penicillin last night, I hope I haven't hurt him because of that. Will it? What will it do from giving him too much like that. So according to your instructions I should have only given him 1/2 cc , is that right? Does it need to be room temperature? If so I should draw it up now and let it sit for a while since it is very cold in the fridge. Thanks! What are the damages I may have done giving him overdose?

Give him the correct dose on time anyway. giving too little runs the risk of selecting for antibiotic resistant bacteria, which you don't want.

Lets see a closeup of his bill and feet. Continue dosage as if you did not over dose the first time.



Damage does not look consistent with a fair fight in the open. Damage to bill and feet would be expecting if foe was engaged through a fence. If battle one sided with both in the same enclosure or outside, then bird in hand had a prior issue that put him at a major disadvantage where he may have actually fought very little.


Keep him in a cool (50 to 70 F) dry place with water nearby. I would resort to treats to get appetite back. If he has been provide adequate grit then he will be able to handle grains. A small amount of chick grower added to what you provide should help.


I normally do not use antibiotics for such yet survival very high.
