Sweet PDZ?

I have boarded in a decent sized area under my chicken bleachers (roost). Its probably at least a 9'9 area. My local feed store can supply 40 or 50 pound bags of pdz. Here's the question:
Granular, powder, mixed between? Mix some sand in with it or not necessarily?
Figure I'll need like 5 bags probably.
 
Why so much? Sweet PDZ is just a deordorizer. It is not bedding material. You just sprinkle it on your shavings or sand very lightly. 4 cups is about right for a 10x10 coop. The granular will probably last longer because it won't sift down to the ground or get dispersed by the wind as easily.
 
Coop has a floor and boarded to resemble a deep sand box. The roost alone is near 10'10'
I'll probably find some sand to mix it with then.
 
Granular PDZ for sure! The powder is really dusty!

You can use 1:3-4 PDZ:sand if you're going to be sifting out the poops.
That's the mix I started out with, but ended up using mostly PDZ, tho I do add some sand in once in a while.
I use Quikrete brand fine sand, it's washed and kiln dried so nice and clean...~$3-4 / 50#.

ETA: oh and...you only need it to be about 1/2" thick/deep, they'll scatter it and dust bathe in it, if it's much deeper.

I'm using straight granular PDZ in our poop board. Poured the whole bag in there and it ended up about 2" deep. Nice and easy to sift out the droppings with a cat litter scoop and the coop doesn't ever smell icky. Our PB is 18" wide, 4" deep and about 6.5' long.

I'm using a product called Stall Dry. It is very much the same stuff as the PDZ. It looks a lot like regular cat litter and is working much the same way. Making for easy clean up and almost no oder. I'm keeping my roost area at about 4 to 5 inches.

I use straight granular PDZ in the bottom of my coop- my chickens free range in the back yard (we have a six foot privacy fence around it) during the day. I fashioned a scoop by attaching some small holed wire fencing (1/4 inch holes) to a yard rake. I just scoop the poop once a week and it keeps the coop nice and dry and clean smelling. The poop clumps nicely as well as the occasional broken egg that one of my girls lays while roosting. Not sure what her deal is, but the system works similar to a kitty litter scoop. Kind of McGyver, but it works for us. My coop is small tho- only 4x6 and has linoleum on the bottom (and only 5 chickens). I started with 2 or 3 bags I think to get a couple of inches in the bottom of the coop- that was in June. I have since added one bag just last week because it started to get a little low.
 
Is pdz only good for inside your coop. I use sand and I love it but it has rained a good 8 inches or more here in ILL. since I started my girls off this year I am new. But what about in the run with all the rain my sand has yet to dry and smells like wet chicken even though they free range. Will this work in wet packed down sand?

PDZ should stay relatively dry. So if your run has sand but is uncovered, then I wouldn't use it out there. I have a covered run with sand, and have added a bag or two of Stall Dry and mixed it in.

I also use granular Stall dry in the bottom of my coop, and toss some onto the poop board. I do not have a walk in coop; but a door that opens up one entire side, and cleaning the coop each am takes about 5 minutes.

I tossed down an entire bag of granular PDZ in my 8x12 run this spring and it helped with the stink from the wet sand. My run is covered but the ground was saturated from snowmelt. I also noticed that the areas where I didn't rake the PDZ in fully so there was a higher ratio of PDZ to sand dried quicker than spots that were mostly sand. I don't think PDZ packs down like sand so it dries quicker.
