My almost 24 week old rooster just had his first real crow yesterday and I thought it was great, but even though I'm on 1.5 acres, I'm pretty close to one neighbor. In addition I just found my local zoning ordinance on chickens and males are prohibited and I'm only allowed "a small flock of no more than 12 hens." I'm already at 12 and I had been daydreaming about a 2nd coop and new babies for months... and it factored into my Christmas list in a large way, lol. I guess there's not really a question in here as much as I'm just venting my disappointment. I'm not sure if I should try and clandestinely keep the roo either or re home. I would totally dispose of him the natural way except I'm new to anything livestock related and I don't think I have the stomach for butchering yet. I probably ought to develop that skill but in the meantime I did a Craig's list ad and hopefully someone will scoop him up and add him to their flock. Or just not tell me he's part of their dinner plans, lol.
 
that stinks...roosters are pretty noisy
no one has to know if you have some extra birds....

If your neighbors don't call you in, they are not going to take them.
 
Yeah, I had the same thought about extra birds... I may or may not indulge myself with a couple more this spring. The rooster issue is just exacerbated this time of year because the trees between me and the neighbors have no leaves and I think they might dampen some of the sound.
 
yeah, winter is a bit annoying, because all our cover falls off! We live in the city as well, but we are allow to have a rooster if it is 300 feet away from all buildings occupied by human (except the owner). Have you ever heard of no crow rooster collars?? Their are a lot of discussions on whether they are good for your rooster or not, but i have used them with no problem...it makes the boys sound about as quiet as a hen...keeps my neighbors happier :) I breed my birds, so i have multiple roos hangin around. If you just have chickens for eggs, then you wouldn't need a rooster.

The ridiculous thing is it's a town of like 3000 and the Welcome to... signs say "We Support Local Agriculture!" Not that I can't understand noise complaints. I have heard of the collar but the reviews seem to very mixed. I am in it mostly for the eggs, but I've kind of gotten used to Suzy (I didn't always know he was a he) being around and leading the flock. I'm still hoping a local farmer might want a handsome guy to help run things in their yard.
 
wow, that is crazy...where i now live is a big city (over 400,000), but we moved to a small town in alabama a few years ago that was picky too. They actually didn't allow any, but we had them without a problem. I hope your boy finds a good home!

A man responded to my ad today and he's picking him up tomorrow. If he's planning on eating him he at least didn't tell me that. He commented on how beautiful he is and said he needed a new rooster for a 2nd chicken pen he had. Hopefully he was being genuine but even if not it at least makes me feel better. Thanks for the crossed fingers!

Yay!! On single layer breed roos, there is less of a chance that he will be eaten. Glad he's going to a good place!
