In the past my husband & I had discussed raising backyard chickens. This idea was quickly dismissed when we looked up the laws for our city.
Recently, the subject was brought up again. I decided to look into whether or not any of the laws had changed. They had not. But this time, I did a bit more digging.
According to our city website, chickens are not allowed "within the corporate limits of the city".
I decided to find a boundary map, just to see exactly where those city limits were. To my surprised our neighborhood is not a part of the city limits. But, we are entirely surrounded by the city.
The map referred to our little portion by another name. When I looked up that city name, it was referred to as a "CDP - Census Designated Place".
I then did some research on CDP's to find out they are unincorporated communities, within a larger city. Designated CDP for Census purposes. But we have no personal municipalities. We use the main city fire department, police department, courthouse, etc.

From what I understand, since we are not within the corporate city limits... there should be no reason we CAN'T have chickens.
However, my husband & I wondered if anyone here is a part of a CDP/unincorporated city within a larger city. Were you able to keep chickens? Did you have opposition within the city? Were you able to keep your chickens or ultimately did the city win?
We are trying to have a better understanding of the legal grounds we have should we face any opposition.
I did already printed up the city ordinance, a copy of their city limits map, a map that defines the CDP. We want our bases covered in the event there is an issue.
As for our city, it's fairly large. Our CDP lies right in the midst of it. We are regular neighborhood with lots of 1/4 (most) to just under 1/2 acre (a few). We would certainly discuss this with our neighbors, and we don't plan on getting a rooster. Just a few, for egg production. I feel fairly confident that if we went this route, other neighbors would follow suit.... which would probably draw more attention to our neighborhood and flock.
Any one have experience in this area with advice to share?
