Has anyone else looked up the info on Rooster Booster Triple Wormer? Someone mentioned it in another thread a day or two ago.

I was horrified to see that the active ingredients are two low dose antibiotics used as growth enhancers. This is EXACTLY the sort of stuff that we have been discussing as problematic in terms of creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Thought I would start a new thread to make sure the information gets disseminated... I had seen it at the feed store, now SO glad I passed it by.

It could almost be called a scam in a way. Say you are in need of a wormer, and at TSC, you see it on the shelf. You haven't heard much about it but give it a try. You don't notice anything different about the chickens, but they didn't die, so it must work. Yea! What a great product! Think I'll go put three CC's in a gallon and go to bed.
 
Worse than a scam, better to use nothing. I'm thinking Oregano would be more effective and less likely to cause antibiotic resistant germs floating around my pea pen. One of the ingredients is a version of bacitraycin... one of the antibiotics in neosporin, which I hope will remain effective. But if I continuously feed low doses (the manufacturer says it can take 6 weeks to be effective on those few worms that it supposedly kills), I think it is very likely that there will be bacitraycin resistant microbes all over the place. They (the manufacturer) wants you to continuously feed it.... so the flock will put on more weight.

Don't think I'll be doing that....

Should I put up the links and info I found? I was just horrified.
 
For goodness sake... It's bad enough that we so often jump and use antibiotics on our birds as it is, now let's hide some antibiotics in an ineffective wormer... Sounds good let's just create more antibiotics that have absolutely no power because we keep creating superbugs Who are resistant to our overused products... Stuff like this has backlashes all the way up through the farming industry, eventually affecting us humans and our antibiotics... just proof that we should always read the label before making a purchase and always research a treatment before we use it... I've even become hesitant to use any sort of antibiotic cream on my birds inless there's actually an infection, I just clean the wound, keep it clean and let the chickens immune system do it's job... I'm really starting to lean towards survival of the fittest with my flock, if they're not fit to survive in the natural world should we be filling them with some antibiotic and tube feeding and what not to keep them alive? Trying to correct problems with malformed chicks instead of culling them just creates more weak chicks in future generations... we're all just a little bit too soft I think, myself included...

Very good observation. I don't use antibiotics, ever. The only thing I buy my chickens are feed, wormers, probiotics, calcium and grit. No treats, no remedies. I agree with chicks that are not healthy when they hatch, I cull them. I am a firm believer in worming as the basis of preventing most health problems. I just wish my chickens could free range, darn neighbors and their dogs.
