Hi

My wife and I are new to chickens and we are looking for some advice on the coop design.

Our property is 3/4 acre and we plan on making a 20 sq ft coop, enough space for 5-7 chickens and have an electric netting fence. We are planning on moving the coop and netting around to have a kind of paddock system going.

We are unsure if we should put wheels on it (all four corners) or just have handle bars on either side. The measurements of the coop will be 4ft x 5ft, and like the idea of a well ventilated coop with half of the siding will be wood, the other half will be 1/4inch hardware cloth.

Most of the designs I have seen for a coop this size use wheels, but they are all wood, I would imagine that using hardware cloth would make it lighter and maybe easier to carry without wheels?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I have a 4 x 4 coop and it is so heavy I cannot lift it at all, even with my two kids helping. I can basically tip it just a bit off the ground for about 10 seconds, is all!

So proceed with caution, and have a plan in place for if it is too heavy to move (i.e.: moving the paddock with the coop being centrally located).

Three things to keep in mind when trying to move a coop:

Center of gravity,
Mechanical advantage length of the lever (in this case the length of handles on your two wheel barrow)
The best type of wheel to match the weight of your coop plus soil conditions.

To quote Alexander the Great "Give me a lever and a firm place to stand and I can move the earth".

Thanks for the advice. I guess something narrower, around 3ft, and longer, might be easier to maneuver if using handles on end and some wheels the other. Time to get to the drawing board!

Also it is really frustrating to not be able to reach all the way into your coop - all the way to the back wall. I have to go to two sides of the coop every day to scoop the poo out of the sand with my kitty litter scoop, as I cannot reach all the way across. So narrower is good for another reason.
