Well, my much-anticipated chicks are finally here :D

Got them a couple of days ago, but despite my years of reading and prepping for this moment, it's been a steep learning curve so far — panicking on the drive home (OMG, are they warm enough!?), panicking when I put them in the brooder (OMG, are they dying!? ... Or just falling asleep?), and panicking about treating my bent-toed runt (OMG, he's on his back pedalling the air!). Finally, all of them have survived their first 48 hours here, and seem to be active and healthy, so I'm ready to share some photos :)

I have 3x Buff Orpingtons, 2x Cream Legbars, 3x Speckled Sussex, 2x Dominiques, and 4x Ameraucanas:

I read your first post, and it reminded me of the Princess and Sour when we brought our first child home.

She had just turned 20 and I was 22 and neither had had ANY experience with infants.

They look all happy and satisfied. And you picked some cool breeds ... can't wait to someday have my own Dominques and Legbars. You are going to love having chickens!!

Aw thanks! :D

Can't tell you how thrilled I (we) are to finally have them. My parents promised me chickens when I was a little girl, but we just never ended up being able to do it, and I've wanted some ever since... Then I met my husband, and it was the first thing we chatted about — I knew he was my man! It's a huge deal to us, and it's our tennyear anniversary this year :D

For the breeds, I'm so thrilled that there seem to be lots of people around me working hard to preserve these amazing heritage birds! I suspect I'll always have a mixed flock because it's too darn tempting — I had trouble limiting myself to "just" 5 breeds — but I'd love to breed as well one day, and do my part! We're in the country, so a rooster is a luxury we can permit ourselves :)

Thanks for the positive comments :D
