Just "inherited" 2 hens.

Hi,

In December my brother committed suicide and I inherited his two Rhodes hens (or so I have been told).

They were hand reared by him and are the most placid chickens I have ever come across.

My sister had them from December but as she lives in her parents in laws house and the chickens have no boundaries they have ended up in my house (which I don't mind, these two hens are great pets).

Anyway, after getting to this site on more than one occasion I decided to join.

Great resource :)
 
Oh thought I would mention I was informed last Sunday and set up a temporary space for them between then and now including 2 days of being booked of work due to a small health issue.

I will be building them a much larger enclosure very soon, hence joining.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your brother :hugs Good luck with the hens and coop building, the girls look like red sex links, sold under various names depending on the hatchery, Red Star, Golden Comet, ISA Brown etc, they are really really good layers of brown eggs.
 
So very sorry for the loss of your brother. He had to have a lot of love inside him to raise such docile chickens. I have heard that breed is not the friendliest. You are very clever and resourceful to have put together living quarters for them with so little notice. Very glad you joined the flock, and hope to hear more from you.

Your set up for them looks very nice. In fact, I think I want to borrow that idea for the short ladder sitting area outside the coop, I think my girls would really like that. One thing you might want to do is raise up their food and water dishes so they're off the ground. That will help keep the straw out of the water bowl. It could be as simple as getting a flower pot you can rest the bowl into so it's sort of chin height for the chickens. Or flipping a broad-based flower pot over so that the bowl can sit on top of it (vs. in the mouth of it).
 
Welcome to BYC - I am so sorry that your introduction to chickens has come in such a sad way. I agree with Kelsie, your lovely ladies appear to be red sex links, great birds who produce loads of nice, big, brown eggs.
