So some folks down on the People With House Chickens thread were asking how I made Radbird's diapers, considering she despised the traditional shoulder/strap design, and I decided to make it a seperate post so I can answer questions without spamming the original thread .

The basis of this design is the use of a wide waistband instead of shoulder straps, giving your bird more freedom of movement without sacrificing security. I use safety pins for this exact reason, as velcro and buttons either weren't as secure or left unneeded bulk that made rad upset.

She is able to spar with the dog, fly up onto things, perch, and dust bathe without any interference from the diaper.

On with the tutorial!!

(In case you couldnt read the photo)

The waistband!

measure snugly around your bird just behind the wing joint, adding a little extra (1 1/2" for me) so you get some good overlap. I made mine about 1 1/4" thick.

The Chestpiece!

Measure from just behind your birds drumstick, up a tad past the end of her keel. Then measure the width between their legs. i also used a much thinner fabric for this bit, as it made radbird seem more comfortable.

The Pouch!

Take your width measurement from the chestpiece bit and add about half that to each side, and you have the width of your pouch!
You can then make the depth about 2/3 of that measurement. seam allowances are important for this bit! EDIT: I used a waterproof fabric I bought off Amazon, And PLEASE invest in some seam sealer! It makes life so much easier!

The Tail Straps!

This part was mostly estimation for me, considering the use of safety pins adds alot of lee-way as far as design. I nade them approximately the distance from the pouch to the beginning of the waistband (3")

ASSEMBLY!!

If anyone has questions just ask!!

I'm interested, but don't quite understand how the tail pouch stays on. Do you have a pattern? Sure would love to find something that works, and my half grown chick would wear. Thanks ahead of time for any help you might give.

The small straps pin to the waistband, and keep the ouch securely fastened over her vent. Patterns wouldn't be much help because of sizing differences, but if you could measure your chuckle I could try??

Hi Reinsaway,
I made up a diaper, and she seemed to be much happier in it than one that goes over the wings. I think that's because she is still full of pin feathers as she grows to be a teen aged chick (the straps seem to be painful on those pinfeathers), I have to be careful how tight I make the waistband around her pinfeathers, or she acts like it's uncomfortable, so she wiggled out of the diaper after a while. She is thin I think because she is growing so fast, so there's not much meat on her bones to hold the waistband in place. Got any ideas? I sure am thankful for your experienced help!
