Egg shell sounds metallic

The strangest thing happened today. Normally, when I tap the shell of my girls' eggs, it sounds, well, like an egg. But today, I tapped the shell of an egg laid today, and it had this very distinctly metallic sound to it. It really sounds like the shell is made of metal - it's so weird!

I only have two hens and no rooster. I did feed her a large chunk of sardine - maybe that has something to do with it? Any thoughts on this? Thanks!!!

Good April Fools joke? LOL

Too early for that so I will take you seriously! I have never heard of that. Sardines wouldn't cause that from what I know.

Any chance on a family member trying to be funny?

Lol! Thanks, Chickensaresweet - no pranksters - just me and my bf here, and I'm the only one who really deals with the chickens - plus I'm sure he would've come clean by now on a joke like that hahaha.

My bf said he thought maybe it has more calcium from the greens we fed them two days ago?

...The shell doesn't feel soft or thin either. It feels and looks totally normal - just sounds weird.

Actually, it could be hollow. Could there be a very small crack that you haven't noticed and air possibly got in? The egg shell could just not bes as thick.

I've had this happen twice now. First time last month with my ameracauna and now today-I'm not sure which one layed it this morning. My chickens are all healthy and are on a good diet. I cracked today's egg open and the yolk was a medium color and everything looked great. The shell wasn't too think either. I have done a little research on it and can't find anything about this.

One of my chickens laid an Egg that sounds like metal as well. It appears to be full. I haven’t cracked it yet but cannot find anything other than this thread mentioning eggs like this. Has anyone else found an explanation for this ?
