I get visited by a pair of Mottled Ducks every year during breeding season about February to May. They hang around the pool each morning about 9:00am, fly away, and come back before sunset. I was thinking about converting my dog house (My dog died) to a more suitable duck house. Can Mottled Ducks (Florida Mallards) be kept as pets in Florida without permit? They can fly in and out at their leisure so I am technically not raising them as pets, just providing them a shelter and possibly food from time to time at no charge....

My Snow Birds (Actually, Mottled ducks do NOT migrate.) They live in Florida only to the best of my knowledge.

I live in Pakistan and a few months ago i purchased two ducklings from a bird shop that's at a walking distance from my house they grew up to be quite odd ducks. I mean we could,nt tell the male or female apart, freaked out i browsed the net for a duck breed fitting that description. turned out they resembled mottled dicks except for the fact that they have white bellies. is their any logical explanation?

I believe you are required to have a permit for captive raised mallards in FL. You'll want to check with fish and game. http://myfwc.com/

I believe it is illegal in all states to capture and keep any wild animal. I don't believe it is illegal to create a wildlife sanctuary on your land with the purpose of attracting birds for you to view and enjoy. I would advise you not feed them any commercial feed. If you do want to feed them I suggest you do so by planting native plants that they like to eat or plant things that will attract bugs for them to eat. I'm not sure they would even use the dog houses. I have to heard my ducks into their coop every night and that wouldn't work with wild ducks.

If you are using chlorine in your pool you shouldn't let them swim in it or drink it.

They sure are pretty. It's nice that you want to give them a safe place to hang out.
