Crushed soft shell egg stuck

I have a hen that is just over a year, had been laying fine until recently. A few weeks ago her shells began to get thinner and thinner. I always have oyster shell & egg shell available. A few days ago, I realized she was stuck. I gave her a warm bath and checked her vent and tried to help it along with KY. No luck, she went to the vet and they gave her calcium and were able to get the egg out, but there was another. So they hydrated her, gave her more calcium, pain killer, antibiotic. No luck. Finally they tried something that is used on dogs in labor. No luck. They told me to take her home. So she's been home a few days. I've given her calcium gluconate, 1ml yesterday. She has been eating some and walking around, but is now getting slower and less interested in food, though still willing to have a little. I just gave her another bath because she was a mess from the vets attempts. She has been doing little soft poops, but this afternoon I haven't seen anything, though she is out in the yard. I just gave her 1.5ml calcium gluconate. I checked her vent with glove and oil and can feel a bit of that **** crushed egg in there. I just gave her some buttermilk because why not.
Before the whole thing started, I had recently treated for coccidiosis with corid and then works with safeguard. Could these have affected her?
What do I do now? How aggressively should I try prying the egg out with my finger? Am I likely to hurt her more than she is now? Am I at the point of just do whatever because she's not likely to make it much longer anyway? Is there any hope for her?

I had a hen with a soft shell egg that broke on it's way out. She had bits of the soft shell stuck in her vent. When I could see them I pulled them out with a pair of tweezers It didn't seam to bother her and after she was able to poop better. Her eggs were really weird for about a week and now they are back to normal. I also always offer oyster shells and they are all on layer feed. They barely ever touch the calcium. I would try feeding her some poly vi sol too since it seems to be a big help to their systems in times of stress. Good luck and keep us posted.

I had a hen in similar circumstances but her egg was broken. I went into her vent and cleaned out all I could feel. About 4 or so hours later she was back to normal.I have read that if the egg is intact to try not to break it...mine was already that way.I happy to say that for my girl it was over 2 yes ago and she is still laying well.

Yup I would get it out either way. Mine was already broken as well and though she didn't like it once I cleaned out her vent she could potty like normal and she was much happier.

She is still alive, eating a little bit and drinking a bit of water. She is walking around the run, but she's also sitting a lot and napping. She had another bath on Saturday, and unlike many other chickens that I've read about on here, she does not like them. I did a little Vaseline finger check, also not something she enjoyed I think because she kept biting me. I no longer felt the smashed egg, but I 'think' I felt a hard egg.

Yesterday she ate and drank and pooped a little bit. When I get home tonight, I think I better try real hard to coax that egg out. I wonder if I should use a tiny dab of numbing agent on her vent? I'm trying to get some more painkiller from the vet but not sure they'll give it to me...

I have never wanted an egg laid so badly!

And I'm starting to wonder if changing their feed about a month ago had some effect on this.

I am sorry for your chicken, I would put her again in a warm bate with some Epsom salt, and leave her alone hoping she will mange to deal alone. If she will make it, it is very important to give here some relief from egg lying you can achieve that by putting her in the dark for at least 16 hours for several days this will stop her egg production.

I did another warm bath, and vent check. I was wrong the crushed egg is still there. I just can't seem to get it out. I gave her a little pain killer and then attempted tube feeding pedialyte and tiny bit of baby bird food so that it was still very liquidy. Neither she nor I enjoyed that procedure. She is so tired, I just left her on a towel in the warm steamy bathroom. This is torture.

I'm so sorry but getting that guy out somehow is the only fix. Keep up the warm baths and she may pass it on her own. Good luck.

I agree, keep scooping until you can remove it all. When I did this almost my whole hand was inside her vent....you will not do her any harm in really exploring her whole vent.But....retained broken egg will eventually take her life.
