Hi, two questions. 1. Do I need to treat for coccidiosis and when?
2. What other than chick crumb can I feed them?

Hi and welcome to BYC! Some people used medicated chick starter and some don't. If you have damp or wet ground with a lot of rain you should likely use medicated feed to help get the chicks immune to cocci.
I use medicated feed for the first 8 weeks because I live in AL. and we have so much rain and humidity that cocci is a problem here.

As young chicks the only thing they should get the first couple months are some scrambled eggs.

I wouldn't treat for cocci unless you're pretty sure they actually have it. If they have it, showing symptoms, I doubt just the medicated feed will be enough to get them cured. You will need some Corid.

As for treats, it's true they need mostly chick feed during their first weeks for proper growth, but treats, very judiciously handed out, are fine. You should supply grit if you're going to feed them other than chick starter.

Lettuce leaf, melon slice, apple slice, crumbled tofu, boiled egg, meal worms or red crawlers, bits of tortilla. They have a lot of fun with a cake pan of dirt with a chunk of grass sod in it. That also supplies the grit.

Thanks very much for that info. They don't have it, I was purely wondering if i needed to as a precaution. They seem very happy and healthy. I can get some fine grit for them if necessary. I just offered them some cooked egg which I think they will enjoy once they realise its food.

I go to the hardware store and buy play sand it is cheaper and you get like 50# for under 5.00 it is fine sand and clean. I even use it to brood my turkey poults on.
