Hi everyone!
I have never owned/cared for chickens before but have always loved them along with every other animal. Yesterday we purchased a brooder starter kit along with 2, three day old ISA browns which we have already fallen in love with! Looking forward to chatting with many of you and learning lots!
Cheers Gillian

Hi :welcome Gillian

Glad you could join the flock! Congrats on your new chicks :celebrate Raising chicks is a fantastic experience so rewarding and lots of fun. I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy raising them! I certainly do. ISA Browns will be great egg layers for you. I too started chicken keeping with 2 of these called Amy and Penny and they were a super starter bird. They are called warrens over here in the UK. Good egg layers very friendly and great characters. Have you stopped by the learning centre? Lots of articles on getting started with chicken adventure. Here is the link > https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Wishing yiu the very best of luck with your new chicks, enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

G'day, and welcome to BYC, Gillian. Glad you decided join our flock. Isa Brown is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are laying machines. You should get loads of large, brown eggs from those two girls.) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.

Hi Gillian, welcome to BYC!

The red sex links will give you lots of eggs and lots of entertainment. We originally got 3 of these for our mixed flock because they are such wonderful egg layers but now I'd always want some around because of their personalities (such curious & fun birds).

Hope you enjoy yours as much as we have ours. Nice to have you join us!

Hi guys,
Thanks for all ur warm welcomes! Silly novice question - what colour hens will our chicks be?
Lilly is a pure yellow fluff ball
Olivia is a predominantly black fluff ball with pale yellow around her beak/chin and on her underbelly.
I've spent hrs trying to find links/info but have had no luck. Thanks very much in advance!

Your ISA Browns (the sex link chicks) will turn out pretty much like ours:

They are a redish color with white underfeathers.

I'm not sure what your dark chicks are.

As far as treats, I think we began giving ours extra things once they got to be about 4 weeks. No particular reason, that's just the way it turned out. You'll want to make sure their treats make up no more than 10% of their diet so they get all the nutrients their feed provides them with. Here's a link to a really helpful treat chart:

Hope that helps!
