Getting everything ready to start raising chickens this summer. Just checking in to say hello. I am heading to work in a couple minutes, so this post will be short, but I will have lots and lots of questions for every one in the near future. Quick overview - I have a 15' x 15' dog pen, which will now be a chicken pen. It is attached to a 11' x 11' shed which I have cut a small hole and put a door on for the hens to come in and out. Still need to make nesting boxes and roosting perches. Plan to start with 6 hens but think I could house many more in the future if we want to. Gtg

Glad you have joined us. Sounds like you have a spacious home in the works for your new flock.

If you haven't already done so, I would suggest you explore the articles in the learning center to help you get started raising chickens.

Please also look at predator proofing the run area.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Good luck with all. I know you will enjoy this new adventure.

Here are a few informational links. At the top of each forum section there are sticky thread with good information. First link is raising chicks, brooding and what not and second is a bunch of threads on coops construction, nesting boxes, interior layout etc.

The size you have is excellent. There is no reason you can't have 20 plus birds in that set up. It's probably able to hold more birds than you'll ever want or need. Check out the deep litter method in the second link. If you decide to go that route you may have to raise the chicken door, that opening is dependent on the depth of your liter. The human door on shed should open out and then you can put a board across the bottom to hold in the liter.

Welcome to BYC!

Checking out the information already mentioned is a great place to start. What breed(s) of chickens are you thinking of getting?

Good luck to you and thanks for joining us!

Hi and welcome to our community!

So glad you could join BYC! Your plans for the coop sound excellent. Many people make coops too small, but your hens will have plenty of room in your coop! Have you thought about which breeds you want? If not, I suggest browsing through the Breed Reviews section: Chicken Breeds

Welcome to our flock and good luck with your future chickens! I hope you enjoy BYC as much as we all do.
