Sounds like you're really close by!! I'm in Amanzimtoti. We've got one Rhode Island Red named Rocky (that's her in my profile picture) and will be adding to our coop on Friday next week when our 5 Hi-Line Browns arrive from Balgowan.

Hahaha got to love it... I am 10km further south "the diving town with a drinking problem". Lol
Small world that's for sure.
How exciting for you to get your new girls so soon. I am still in the process of setting up. Have already pre ordered my girls from Camper down. So when I'm all set up I will go and fetch them. I have the choice between Rhode Island Reds or Hyline whites and still debating which ones I'd prefer. With a 3 yr old I want a breed that will be quite friendly seeing as he wants to "look after them:.

I know EXACTLY where you mean!! hahahahaha!!!!

I've heard only good things about both breeds. The RIR's make awesome 'pets'. We originally had 4 Rhode's and all of them were very friendly and very sociable. I used to love walking round the garden with the four of them following behind like a herd of feathered puppies. Definitely felt like a 'Mama Bird'!! They got so friendly that we could stand one end of the garden and shout, 'here chuck-chucks' and they'd all come running looking like Ninja Turtles with their heads down and wings out!!

Unfortunately three of our 'girls' turned out to be Roo's and the 3am crowing got to be a problem, especially considering we're in a residential area AND the hen house is about three meters away from our main bedroom!! We relocated the Roo's to Flag Animal Farm in Ballito so we keep in touch and visit them every now and again. The nice thing is that we can still shout, 'here chuck-chuck' when we visit the farm and the boys will come running just like they did when they lived with us

I'm told Hi-Lines also make for a very sociable flock so we're hoping our new girls will settle in nicely and that they'll be amusing us with the Ninja Turtle run in no time.

haha Flag is exactly what started this.. we took my 3 yr old there for his birthday in May and he loved it. I have always wanted chickens though. I have started collecting egg shells to grind up, and I have planted out a new herb garden and about 30 Pansy seedlings.... and I have finally gotten my hubby onboard which is great. Now I can decide if I want a Square or Hooped coop/run... also pvc vs aluminium. Termites and woodborer are the devils on this land right now so wood wouldnt last.
faaaar too much to think about.
oooh your new girls arrive this week. how exciting!!!!
