Favaucanas - Boy or Girl?

This is one of my 10-week-old Favaucanas. Just by looking at it, any idea if this is this a boy or a girl? This one tends to be fighting with the boys quite a bit and is seen picking on the girls, but I just can't figure this one out. It is hard to tell in this picture, but its comb is a little more red than it appears, but not as thick as the other boys, but not as small or pale as the 1 girl I have.

Below is a picture of one of the Favaucana's that we are almost sure is a roo (not 100% sure). Thoughts on #2?

Sorry I couldn't get better pictures than this. They are pretty flighty and don't like it when I bring my phone out to take pictures.

Those both look like cockerels.

Hi Fasschicks. Any updates on your Favaucanas? I have a one month old that looks like a little version of chick #1 so I'm trying to learn via other people's chick -sexing experiences. There's also not a ton out there yet about sexing this breed. Did they end up being pullets or cockerels?

So, out of the 6 Favaucanas that I had, this is how it ended up....

I was lucky enough to rehome 3 of the boys as well as 1 Lavender Ameraucana boy. I had 2 farms that needed roosters for their girls. How about that?!?

The first 2 pictures below are of my only girl. They are not great pictures, but for some reason, these Favaucanas just avoid me when I have my phone out. Weird.....








Pictures 3 and 4 are of the boy that was in my original post (picture 1). He has a little more of that rust color on him, but that is about all that has changed except that his comb is getting redder now. I am holding out all hope that he really is a she, but hope in one hand......

So, I have realized that all of my boys had those rust patches on them. My girl is the only one that did not have that on her. I really hoped to get 2-3 girls out of this batch, but it looks like it is 5 boys to 1 girl. Bummer.

My Favaucana chick is turning 4 weeks tomorrow. Were you able to tell with any of them for sure by that point? I know it is still early especially since this breed has smaller combs. I had convinced myself that she was a girl due to her small, pale comb but this was before I knew she was a Fauvacana (thought she was a BCM). Now I really wonder as her behavior seems very male. They all chest bump to an extent but she is ALWAYS in the ring, so to speak, esp. with my olive eggers (who have appeared all male since hatch). She is the cutest, plumpest thing and was the first chick we saw at hatching so I'm more attached than I wanted to be. She does have copper in her wing tips too and tonight she called out a warning call to the flock when a bird flew overhead :/

I have posted pics and a video of her in some of my other threads. Would you mind by any chance taking a look and making a guess? She is a week older now so I will post a new one tomorrow. Comb is still not pink or red but I think I am trying to find things to comfort myself. Haha!

Their sexing would be similar to Easter Eggers. A pea comb with three clear rows would mean male. Dark red shoulder patches would be another indicator. And then there is always the comb turning red by ten weeks old.

The rust colouring on the wings is always a cockerel sign. So sorry you only got one pullet!

Hey wildcrafted! I took a look at your JoJo and in my very amateur opinion, it looks very similar to my favaucana chicks. I had one absolutely amazing favaucana roo. At about 6 weeks old, I started letting them outside of the coop each evening under our supervision. From the very first evening they were out, when it started to get dark, he would start ushering each and every baby into the coop. He would make this very interesting sound calling out to them and then walking around the area to be sure everyone was in for the night before he went in. If they weren't in by a certain point, he would literally go round them up and get them to go inside. He was very protective of them.

When we found the perfect place to rehome him, I put him outside of their pen so I could easily grab him when the lady stopped by. He was so upset to be split apart from his girls that I finally had to put him back with them until she arrived. Luckily he went with another favaucana boy to his new home. The lady said they stuck together like glue and didn't come out of the barn for 4 days. He eventually started taking care of his new flock. At 10 weeks old, he was a very large boy. I noticed that all the roos had very broad chests, copper on the wings, and would play this fighting dance - heads down and they would jump up with their feet attacking each other. Also, almost all the boys except 2 of them started to crow by 9-10 weeks old. Once I homed them, within 1-2 days the next one would start to crow. I just had to figure out which one was crowing. I didn't want to make any mistakes and accidentally home a hen.

All of our favaucanas had multiple extra toes on each foot and was feather-legged. I hope this helps. Good luck and let me know how things turn out.

junebuggena - none of my favaucanas had the distinctive EE/ameraucana pea combs. I have several of both and they don't look the same. They had small combs, but didn't have distinctive rows.

K Spot - come on....can't you humor me?!? I realize it is almost 100% a boy, but waiting to hear his crow. At least for now he is not crowing, so I have time to rehome him. I have an ad out on CL and hope that one more person is looking for a boy to live on their farm. I am realistic...we did have to cull one out already.
