This is only the second time I've set eggs, so this is all new to me. Today is day 6 of a dozen I set. I decided to candle them just to take a peak and freaked out when I couldn't find an air sack in one of the eggs but it had very good development (distinct veins and embryo). The problem is the egg is almost a perfect oval, so I couldn't tell which end was up when I set it. The embryo is completely at one end while it is at the edge of the air sack for the other eggs. All of the eggs I have set have been from my backyard flock. My first setting was 8 eggs with 5 hatching, 2 culled at 10 days with no development and one that stopped around day 16. So far I think there are only 2 are duds from this set, but that one has me nervous because I don't know if I need to reposition it or what. Help!

Were it me, I'd just lay it flat and watch the embryo. They usually will head the direction they want. If there is no air cell it's doubtful it will hatch though. Sorry and wish you the best.

My incubator has an automatic turner, so there isn't a place to lay it flat. Right now it is positioned where the embryo is at the top. Fingers crossed an air sack develops. If not, I might cry. It has the best development of all the eggs

It still needs to be turned I just meant if possible to lie it on it's side and not up and down as some do. I've never seen an egg with no air cell but embryo.

I tried to put it on its side, but the shape of the cups was where it was going to roll off. The embryo looks to be developing right where the air sack should be, but since it is only day 6, it may just be slow to develop. I'll check it again on day 10. Fingers crossed it is still going strong, with or without an air sack

There is an air sack! It is smaller than the ones in the other eggs, but it is there! Very strong veining in it as well. I did my day 10 candle and all 12 eggs had development, which blows my mind, especially since there were 2 that I couldn't see anything in on day 6.

It hatched!!! More than a day later, but we have a little black chick. After starting with 12 and culling 2 that stopped developing before day 18, we had 8 hatch, though one didn't make it. Last 2 eggs are still in the incubator, so maybe we'll have a couple more late ones

This is tiny Tim, the chick from the egg in question. He is smaller than the rest of the chicks and is staying with us instead of going with the other 6. He is very affectionate and doesn't like to be alone when there is anyone around. He is going to be the most spoiled bird in the flock.
